BAND is dedicated to supporting, documenting and showcasing the artistic and cultural contributions of Black artists and cultural workers in Canada and internationally.

Our Vision

Connecting black culture to communities to inspire, enlighten and educate through the arts.


BAND Gallery and Cultural Centre is dedicated to developing emerging artists, curators and administrators by providing an accessible venue to showcase their work to the general public.

BAND’s Quarterly Canadian Culture Series, is a presentation and speaking series intended to encourage dialogue on current events among Black artists, cultural workers and the larger society.

Karen Carter (Chair)

Chair: KareCarter  is the Executive Director of the Myseum of Toronto, an innovative approach to the museum experience, and a new way to experience Toronto’s natural spaces, cultures, history, archaeology and architecture. She has over 20 years experience working and volunteering in a variety of cultural and educational settings in Toronto. Karen previously served as a faculty member for the Culture and Heritage Site Management program at Centennial College’s Story Arts Centre.


Earl Modeste

Earl Modeste brings a strong corporate governance perspective to the BAND Board of Directors. His experience in regulatory compliance and finance brings direction to the organization’s strategic planning objectives. A Branch Manager with one of Canada’s largest mutual fund companies, Modeste combines his professional experience with his passion for the Arts.

Breanne Mounter

Breanne Mounter is currently the Business Development Manager at Best Doctors. Breanne is passionate about recruiting motivated and driven individuals and helping them build successful careers. Breanne’s professional expertise also includes keynote speaking, business coaching and planning, market development, financial planning, career coaching, marketing, and public relations. Breanne also had a successful career as a professional singer and is passionate about the arts.

Karen Tyrell

Karen Tyrell is a Communication Specialist working primarily in the film and television industry. Selected list of clients include Universal Pictures, Universal Home Entertainment, Relativity Media Focus Features, Fox Searchlight Warner Bros., HBO, Bazan Entertainment, and Syfy.

Raymond Reid

Raymond Reid is an award winning public servant working in program delivery and program design.  His achievements include National Departmental Awards of Excellence for Excellence in Program Design and for the delivery of portions of Canada’s Economic Action Plan during the economic downturn.  Raymond is also an avid sports fan who enjoys reaching out to different community groups through his participation in volleyball and tennis throughout the city.

Andrea Daniel-Maxwell

Andrea Daniel-Maxwell has over 25 years of experience working with youth and families from various socioeconomic and cultural environments in the US and Canada. She has experience in staff training, counseling, and crisis intervention as well as case management. Andrea holds a Masters in Social Work from Clark Atlanta University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alabama.

Julie Crooks

Julie Crooks holds a Phd in the Department of History of Art and Archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Her research focuses on historical photography in Sierra Leone, West Africa and the diaspora. Julie has taught numerous courses in these fields at the AGO, as well as OCADU, University of Toronto and York University. She is currently the AGO’s Assistant Curator of Photography.


Jubril Debola Gaffar

Jubril Debola is an experienced public servant who Is currently a Business Technology Solutions Manager with the Ontario Public Service. He has built a career around project management since immigrating to Toronto from Lagos, Nigeria 14 years ago. Jubril holds a Masters in Environmental Toxicology & Pollution Management and a Bachelor of Science, both from University of Lagos, Nigeria.
