CUTTING A FIGURE: BLACK STYLE THROUGH THE LENS OF CHARLES “Teenie” HARRIS

EXHIBITION DATES

April 26 – June 17, 2018

ON THE FENCE

Continuously evolving in our aspirations of creating and reimagining spaces, opportunities and occasions for and around Black art, BAND presents our BAND Fence Gallery exhibition space. While their locations might be on-the-fence, the collections exhibited in the BAND Fence Gallery are decidedly striking and ever-relevant.

Running in concert with the Cutting a Figure: Black Style Through the Lens of Charles “Teenie” Harris exhibition within the BAND19 house, the Redefining Black Identity exhibition offers rare access to historical portraits of Black Canadians. Immortalized in photographs in the early 19th century, these Black sentinels greet gallery visitors along the BAND fence with an elegance that defies attitudes and ideologies of their time.
